Here are just a few ideas to get your creative wheels turning for some school-themed crafts:
Backpack Tags or Iron-On Labels
Cut a school themed cut file on HTV and personalize your kid’s backpack (because otherwise, they’ll all look the same on the hook!). Bonus points for adding their name … I see you, grades K–5 mamas.
First Day of School Shirts
Use these free cut files in Cricut Design Space or with your Silhouette machine to create custom school shirts! Snap a pic for those school photos with a tee that says it all – from “Preschool Vibes” to “Senior Status.”
Teacher Gifts – Mugs, Tote Bags and more!
Grab a free SVG cut file, a blank physical item (like a canvas tote or mug), and you’ve got the perfect design for your favorite teacher. Trust me, a coffee mug that says “Teach, Love, Inspire” is never not appreciated.
Memory Keeper Crafts
Use your crafty talents to make some cherished projects. These kiddos grow too fast so a scrapbook page of those frist and last day of school are always fun. Plus a cute memory box to store all their school items is a great way to stay organized come graduation day!

- Siser Juliet or Romeo
- Any machine that uses digital files, PNG files, or SVG cut files

Tips for Using Free SVG Files with Your Cutting Machine
So you’ve downloaded some free SVG cut files, now what? Whether you’re a Cricut newbie or a seasoned cutting machine pro, here are some helpful tips to get the most out of your free back-to-school SVGs.
1. Download and Unzip Like a Pro
Most free SVG files come in a zipped folder, which might include multiple versions of the design (like SVG, PNG files, DXF, or even PDF formats.) Before you can use the digital file with your cutting software, you’ll need to unzip the folder.
On most computers, you can right-click the ZIP and select “Extract All.” Boom, your files are ready to go!
Pro Tip: Store your school SVG cut files in clearly labeled folders so you can easily find them next year when the school season sneaks up on you again. (It always does.)

2. Uploading to Cricut Design Space
After you unzip the files, open your software of choice: Cricut Design Space, Silhouette Studio, or Leonardo Design Studio if you’re using a Siser Juliet or Romeo.
- In Cricut Design Space, click “Upload,” then browse for the SVG file you just extracted.
- In Silhouette Studio, use the DXF and “Open” or “Import” option, depending on your version.
- In Leonardo, open the file and customize right inside the software. (Fancy, right?)
SVGs are usually ready to go as cut files, but PNG files can be used for print then cut projects, stickers, sublimation, or mockups.
3. Use the Right Material for the Job
Not all back-to-school crafts are created equal. Here are some ideas by material:
- HTV (Heat Transfer Vinyl) – Great for school shirts, backpacks, or teacher gifts like canvas totes.
- Adhesive Vinyl – Perfect for labeling water bottles, pencil cases, folders, or lunchboxes.
- Printable Vinyl or Sticker Paper – Ideal for planners, classroom supplies, or bulletin boards.

4. Consider Creating Your Own School SVGs
Feeling extra crafty? Create your own school cut file using Siser’s Leonardo Design Studio—yes, the same one made for the Juliet and Romeo machines! It’s surprisingly beginner-friendly and a great way to personalize your own SVGs for the first day of school, grades K–5, or even custom classroom signs.
If you upgrade to the Pro version of Leonardo, you can export and save your custom designs as SVG files. That means you can use them again and again, sell them (check licensing first), or even share with your crafty friends.
Need help knowing what’s safe to sell or use personally? Here’s the breakdown on commercial use vs. personal use SVGs so you can craft with confidence.
5. Check for Sizing and Layers Before Cutting
Sometimes free school SVG files come in layered designs with multiple elements. Before you hit “Make It,” double-check the size of each part in your cutting machine software and review the layers. That “I’m just here for the recess” tee may need a little resizing before it’s first day of school photo-ready!

Ready to Craft the New School Year?
So sharpen your scissors, heat up that heat press (or Cricut EasyPress), and get ready to make the new school year extra special. Whether you’re crafting for your kiddo, a classroom, or your crafty friends, these free back to school SVGs are just the thing to kick off the school season with style.
