Supplies You’ll Need to Make Your DIY Fall Decoration

Little sewing machine, ribbon, and other supplies on a blank painters canvas.

To make this fall decor craft, gather some staple crafting supplies and a few items from around your home or local craft store. Here’s what you’ll need to get started:

  • Stretched canvas (8×10 or larger works well with 2-inch ribbon)
  • Pumpkin template (print mine or sketch your own)
  • Quilting batting for a soft, dimensional look
  • Sewing Machine – Mine is a Signer
  • Ribbon in seasonal colors like orange, burgundy, and plaid with fall colors
  • Or use a few strips from a fall themed Jelly Roll
  • Piece of fabric for the stem or to add a background layer
  • Scissors
  • Xacto Knife
  • Acrylic paint or Stain (I use stain)
  • Staple gun and staples (or hot glue for those who prefer it)
  • Dried leaves, faux leaves, fall flowers, cinnamon sticks, or pine cone wreaths for texture

Additional supplies to get creative with your fall home decor ideas:

  • Mod Podge to secure embellishments or a protective layer
  • Decorative corn (a charming fall accent in a jar with a tea light)
  • I used table runner with an autumn spirit under my sign
  • Faux Pumpkins for decorating

Additional Creative Ideas for Personalizing Your Pumpkin Wall Art

There are countless ways to make this fall canvas art uniquely yours! Here are a few creative ideas to add even more charm:

  • Incorporate Fall-Themed SVGs: Try adding a cute SVG of fall words or images to the background. This detail is easy to do with acrylic paint and stencils, making it feel polished and festive.
  • Tie In Seasonal Colors and Textures: Use different fall textures like burlap for a rustic touch, or add additional faux pumpkins around the canvas frame to make it the focal point of your fall home decor display.
  • Add Words or Phrases: Use fall-inspired phrases on your Cricut, or cutting machine, like “Gather” or “Pumpkin Spice Season” with iron-on vinyl or stencils to personalize your canvas with a warm message.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Pumpkin Canvas Art

This craft project is a fun DIY fall decor craft project and could be done in an afternoon. It makes great fall gifts if you need one for a birthday or hostess thank you on Thanksgiving.

If you don’t want to make a sign, make this pumpkin and add it to a throw pillow for some fun fall-themed decor.

I made this fun home decor craft at a quilting event I attended with my mom. We have fun just sewing 2 full days! Here is my work space as I began this project.

Step 1: Prepare the Canvas Frame

To begin, carefully remove the canvas from its frame using a utility knife. Some of the staples are too much work to remove, and leaving them on won’t show when you hang it on the wall, so I decided just to cut it off. Save the frame—we will reattach it later.

If you’d like to customize it with seasonal color, paint or stain it with craft paint in rich tones like deep brown, rust orange, or muted green, which bring out the natural fall flair that goes with your ribbon or material.

Step 2: Cut and Arrange Your Pumpkin Template

After preparing your frame, use your pumpkin template to trace a pumpkin shape onto the batting. Cut the shape out carefully. This batting layer will give your pumpkin a soft, textured look. Make sure to round the edges slightly to give the pumpkin a plush, cozy feel that’s perfect for autumn decor.

  • Cut out your pumpkin template to the size you want and trace it onto the quilting batting. This step will give your pumpkin that soft, dimensional look, just like those cozy faux pumpkins and throw pillows you see around this time of year.
  • Cut your ribbons so they extend an inch beyond the traced edges of your pumpkin. Arrange them in rows, or get creative with diagonal or crisscross patterns. This step is all about creating that cozy, quilted texture that adds depth to your pumpkin wall art.

I designed this to have a rough edge for a more rustic feel, but you can use binding and finish off the edges. Keep this in mind as you draw your pumpkin.

Step 3: Create Your Ribbon Pumpkin

Fall colored ribbon on sewing machine.

Next, cut multiple ribbon strips slightly longer than your pumpkin shape. Lay them horizontally across the pumpkin shape to create a textured, woven effect, making sure each strip overlaps slightly. Once sewn, you’ll go back and trim them.

This step can be ribbon, material, scraps, or even just glue with cute scrapbook paper. You can also do this horizontal like I did mine, or vertical, and you can get real creative and cut/sew these at an angle.

Now, sew the strips together, or use hot glue to glue them directly onto the batting if you prefer a no-sew approach.

Continue until the entire pumpkin shape is covered with ribbon.

This will give you a panel of your ribbon slightly bigger than your pumpkin shaped batting.

  • Tip: This layered ribbon pumpkin design adds a cozy, rustic look and is the perfect way to blend with other craft projects around the house, like pine cone wreaths or a mini assortment of pumpkins.

Sew the ribbon strips together along the long edges until you have a sheet large enough to cover your traced pumpkin shape. Quilting the seams gives it a fun patchwork style that suits fall decor.

Step 4: Craft the Stem and Add Moss

Cut out your stem template from the file or freehand draw one. Trace it onto the batting using your piece of fabric.

OOPS! … I forgot to photograph this process but here is my finished stem. My quilting is not an even 1-inch quilt patter, but I think she’s a cutie! I then rough cut the edge according to my line I traced from the template.

Choose a fabric in earthy, fall-inspired colors, or go with a rustic plaid – get creative here. Attach this piece to the pumpkin and, if desired, add a small section of moss around the stem to enhance that seasonal charm.

Start sewing your fabric to the batting stem shape. If you’re using scraps or strips, sew 2 together on the batting and then continue until your stem is covered in this fabric.

Now that you have your elements prepped, you can begin assembling your pumpkin wall decor.

  • Tip: For a personal touch, you can freehand leaf designs or add smaller pumpkin cutouts on the canvas, making it one of your favorite fall craft ideas this year.

Step 5: Assemble and Attach

Now trim your fabric pumpkin about an 1/4-inch from your seam. Leaving the rough edge or add binding at this stage if you prefer a more finished pumpkin.

Add your pumpkin on the loose canvas fabric (i used the back side but you can use either side. Secure the pumpkin by sewing or I used hot glue gun to add mine.

This is a great project for layering textures, so don’t be afraid to experiment with additional accents like dried or faux leaves or a small spray of decorative corn = it’s fall fun with hot glue. haha

Step 6: Embellish with Fall Accents

In this step I hot glued the moss to in small chunks to the bottom of the pumpkin. Then I attached the leaves we made. Topping it off with a cute, simple bow.

For a personalized touch, consider adding embellishments like dried leaves, mini pumpkins, or even a pumpkin spice latte-inspired candle nearby.

Adding little seasonal elements will enhance the fall décor ideas you bring to life and make this one of your favorite fall craft ideas.

Step 7: Reattach Canvas to Frame

Finally, pull the loose canvas around the frame and secure it tightly using a staple gun. Once secured, trim any excess canvas. Your DIY fall decoration is ready to display!

Now the fun part. Add on your embellishments. I had some ribbon with leaves I used in a curl fashion and hot glued down for some depth.

You can add-on a bow, some rhinestones or twine for some additional cuteness. Even a bow with faux fall greenery to the top is a good addition to this fall craft idea.

You can add some fall words with HTV. I would do this before adding the pumpkin if you have a bigger heat press. Or use a handheld press or iron to do it later.
